Still Learning

About Meg

Uploaded profile pictureI'm the Manager of Learning Technology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. I'm married and have one nearly grown-up daughter and live most of the time in the West End of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. We spend a lot of time playing on the beach on Gabriola Island and at our cottage, Tom's Folly, and hope to retire there within dreaming distance. When in town, I play squash regularly at the Vancouver Racquets Club and work out at the Robert Lee YMCA.

The best thing about working in and around educational technology is the opportunities it provides to work with people who are constantly seeking new ways to teach, learn, and communicate. What I like best about exploring new technologies is the space it provides to reflect on how we are doing things at the moment and wonder how we could do them better in the future.

A day in the life of..

My day-to-day duties at KPU include working with a small but terrific team on the care and feeding of the institutional learning management system, Moodle, and assisting faculty who are trying to incorporate technologies like Moodle into their teaching.

Our Learning Technology team operates within the new Teaching & Learning Commons. We welcomed new Vice Provost, Teaching and Learning, Stephanie Chu to KPU in July 2016; the super hero of Admin managers, Katherine Boleszczuk in November of 2016; and most recently, in Nov. 2017, we welcomed Senior Manager, Educational Development, Gina Buchanan. We are on an exciting new journey as they bring some much needed focus and energy to Teaching and Learning here.

We recently integrated ePortfolios (Mahara) into our supported suite of tools and we are planning an upgrade to Moodle 3.2 and a Kaltura pilot in Spring 2017. We are continually testing new plug-ins and tool integrations and are currently exploring the CanCred Factory digital badging platform.

Professional interests

Eportfolios and personal learning environments
My research for my Master's degree examined institutional implementations of eportfolio systems

After what seems like the longest running pilot in history, KPU finally implemented supported services for Mahara, and hopefully for additional eportfolio options down the road. Yay! It may happen before I retire.

Open and Flexible Learning
I find the movement to open, adaptable educational resources and open approaches to learning fascinating and inspiring, especially the recent developments at OERu and the BCcampus Open Textbook project

We have a number of faculty members involved in flexible learning and open textbook projects at KPU and my team and I try to do all we can to support them and spread the word.

Open Badges
Interest in eportfolios for learning just kind of segued to interest in the open badge movement. I think badges have a lot of potential to help students tell a more complete story about who they are and who they want to become.

We are currently exploring CanCred Factory as a potential badging platform and working with a number of institutional stakeholders about how open badges might fit at KPU.
